The centre of Perpignan is
approximately 50 minutes drive from Can Llouquette.
Perpignan was once the capital of Roussillon
and now acts as préfecture of
the Pyrénées Orientales.
It was also once a flourishing port - but now finds itself about
3 Km from the sea. The hub of Perpignan is the Place
Arago.
Narbonne (1
hr 30 mins), once the capital of the Languedoc, enjoys impressive
medieval monuments, boulevards and lively streets.
Béziers (1
hr 45 mins) is a busy port on the Canal du Midi and the river Orb
best known for its rugby team and impressive hilltop skyline. It
is also a famous centre for bull
fighting.
Just past Béziers
is the attractive stone-built town of Pézenas (2
hrs) - little changed since the 1700s.
Carcassone (1
hr 30 mins), will seem like the middle ages brought to life. Images
of the walled-city and its castle
ramparts breathtaking. And each year there are three
medieval
events
to
underscore the
drama.
Montpellier (2
hrs), lying some 10 Km from the Mediterranean sea, is a maze of
narrow lanes, off which you will find wonderful courtyards,
squares and boulevards. The hub of this Lou
Clapas (or heap of
stones as the old quarter of Montpellier is affectionately known)
is the Place
de la Comédie.
Toulouse (2
hrs 30 mins) is the ancient and animated capital
of the Languedoc. It is also the fourth largest city in France
and a rapidly expanding commercial metropolis to boot.
Girona and Barcelona in Spain are
reachable within 1
hr 30 mins and 2 hours respectively.
